Turtle found stranded off Dania Beach returned to ocean after rehab - Sun Sentinel

MIAMI

The 12-pound turtle, which was found stranded in the waters off Dania Beach, has been at the Miami Seaquarium since May, going through a program that tested whether he could still dive, float and eat on his own. It's a bit different from celebrity rehab.

But by the time he left the Seaquarium to return to the ocean, Cinco was a minor celebrity himself. Children in the Seaquarium's summer program gathered to wave him goodbye, hoisting signs and cheering the turtle's departure.

"The best part was being able to give him signs and touch him," said 8-year-old Paola Betancourt, who wants to grow up to be an animal scientist. "He felt soft and really smooth."
Judy Tazinski, an animal care supervisor at the Seaquarium, held the turtle aloft for the kids to get a good look. She pointed out, right behind the turtle's mouth, where the hook was stuck. "For him, eating is easy," Tazinski told the kids. "That's probably why he had a hook in his mouth. He has a huge appetite."

Cinco's departure was also a time to teach the kids about marine wildlife safety. The children said their final goodbyes before Cinco was transported to the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park.

The turtle flapped his paddles a couple times before disappearing into the ocean. Hopefully, he won't have to go back to rehab.
