Florida Marlins Hanley Ramirez has MRI; return still uncertain - Miami Herald

NEW YORK -- The Marlins are awaiting the results of an MRI that was performed on Hanley Ramirezs injured left shoulder on Wednesday, and it remains uncertain whether he will miss the rest of the season.

Ramirez took himself out of a rehab game with Single A Jupiter on Tuesday because of discomfort in the shoulder and returned to Miami for a medical evaluation.

The Marlins had been hoping that Ramirez, who has been out since early August with a sprained shoulder, could rejoin the team Friday.

Now those plans have been shelved.

Ramirez was hitting just .243 when he injured the shoulder diving for a ball on Aug. 2.

Despite a poor season, his impact on the team is reflected in its record. When Ramirez has been in the lineup, the Marlins have gone 50-39. When hes been absent, they are 10-35.

Home run derby

No Marlin has ever won a home run title.

But, with a month to go in the season, Mike Stanton is in the thick of contention.

Stanton belted his 31st home run on Tuesday, putting him in a tie for the league lead with Albert Pujols and Matt Kemp.

Two other players Dan Uggla and Lance Berkman were only one home run behind.

At least two will stay neck and neck, Stanton predicted.

Stanton tried putting his mammoth home run on Tuesday an opposite-field shot that landed in the upper deck in right at Citi Field into perspective.

LoMo hit a ground ball for two runs, Stanton said of Logan Morrisons two-run single in the seventh, and I hit the ball as far as whatever for one run. Who cares?

The Marlins will likely bring up a minor-league pitcher to start Fridays game. Brad Hand pitched on Sunday for Double A Jacksonville and would be in line for a Friday start if the Marlins opt to bring back the lefty to face the Phillies. Ricky Nolasco will start Saturday, and Anibal Sanchez will go on Sunday.

Celebrity poker for charity

Some current and former members of the Marlins are expected to participate in the Jeff Conine Celebrity Poker Classic on Sunday at Calder Casino & Race Course. Proceeds from the event will go to the Conine Clubhouse at Joe DiMaggios Childrens Hospital.

In addition to Conine, other members of the Marlins expected to participate in the event include Mike Lowell, Josh Johnson, Mike Stanton, Gaby Sanchez, Mike Cameron, Ricky Nolasco and more.

A VIP baseball-themed reception kicks off at 6 p.m., followed by the tournament at 7 p.m.

Each of the tournament tables at Calders Studtz Poker Club will feature a different celebrity or Marlins player.

A $250 donation to the charity gets you a seat into the tournament.
